In one class, a student used AI to rewrite an essay but did not acknowledge it. The ethical issue involved is academic honesty, as the student presented AI-generated content as their own work. This misrepresentation undermines fairness and the integrity of academic assessment. The appropriate action would be for the teacher to discuss the situation privately with the student, explain the importance of transparency, and require a revised submission with proper acknowledgment of AI assistance. To prevent similar cases, teachers should clearly outline policies on AI use, provide guidance on acceptable practices, and educate students about academic integrity in the digital era.
Case: A class of students was working on a take-home test which was intended to be done individually
Reflection:
The ethical question in this case is the collaboration that is not authorized which is a violation of academic integrity. Although peer learning is a great idea, students disobeyed when given clear instructions and compromised the objectivity of the evaluation. This may have an impact on the accuracy of grading and unfair advantage on other students who have abided by the rules. A proper reaction would be the investigation of the case, the conversations with the students in question, and the imposition of any penalty, which is prescribed by the academic dishonesty policy. The chance to enlighten the students about the purpose of individual assessment and importance of personal responsibility should also be taken. To avert such cases, Lecturers may create more challenging to accomplish assessments by collaborating, incorporating reflective questions, or demanding process working. It can also be achieved by setting expectations at the beginning of the term by giving clear instructions and discussing the integrity.
As a student, we have to upload "Declaration and Acknowledgement of the Use of Gen AI Statement" before we submit our assessments. We need to declare some details if the assessments is completed with the help of AI,such as prompts, which AI tool and the generated responses.I think it is a good way to remind student to acknowledge AI tools in their articles.
Because I have not experienced or observed any dilemmas caused by AI in teaching/learning, let me analyze the example:
What ethical or integrity issue is involved:
The student is cheating by using the AI to rewrite the essay, which also involves plagiarism because he/she directly refer to others' work without self-efforts.
What actions or decisions would be appropriate:
I think the soft solution is to allow the student to do this work again on his/her own, with a degration of grade. For a tough solution, the student should be failed in this course.
How could similar issues be prevented in the future?
Set up the detection of the AI rate and the similar rate, the teacher should check these metrics before publishing the work.
Digital ethic is definitely a important topic and interesting topic in nowadays life. As we students, we need to handle with mountains of course work or some research work everyday. Thus, with the help of ai we do reduce lots of stress from these unavoidable work so that we can spend some time on what we really interesting in or something more need to do. But as for these "ai Work", are there really responsible for the teacher or are there really helpful to our study? For example, during my bachelor learning, we most physics undergraduate students dont have much masetered knoledge of coding but we need coding to help us dealing with experiment data and simulation. At this time, ai do help us a lot for it. Perhaps in this moment we have some ethic problem in dealing data with ai but it is not the key problem to the things we do since we didnt create data from ai and we just use ai to help us properly and it do increase the efficiency of our work. However, it may make us lazy to increase the skill in coding. The best way is we can use ai to help us master the skill of coding about analysis the data. Also during the learning, we may come up with much ideas for our experiment.
Back in my bachelor's thesis, I thought of using AI to generate the introduction part for me. I had a dilemma of whether I should paraphrase the whole generated paragraph or copy a part of the passage and sandwich it with some of my own words. I was not sure if sandwiching the AI-generated passage shows that I did not acknowledge the use of AI. Eventually, I took no chances; I only used the ideas shown by AI and explained them using only my own words.

The core ethical issue is about academic honesty and fairness problem. Student's essay did not present and represent their work which borrow someone ideas.

The decision would give fail or zero to the essay since student should recieve a warning on the assignment which to educate them and direct student to use correct way to do homework and remember to ackowlege if using the helps of AI.
- To prevent future issues, the institution must provide clearer guidelines on AI use, explicitly classifying unacknowledged paraphrasing as plagiarism. Adding workshop activities on digital literacy and ethical AI use into the curriculum is essential.
Case: when writing the dissertation, a student's paper was flagged as “high AI use".
Issue: Possible undisclosed AI assistance during the dissertation writing. But AI detectors can be wrong, so due process and fairness matter.
Actions: Meet the student, explain the flag, and request process evidence (outline, drafts with timestamps/version history, notes, sources). If AI was used, require an AI-use statement (tool, prompts, what was kept/changed, how accuracy was checked). Add a brief oral check or timed in-class writing to verify competence. Allow revise/resubmit per policy; document everything and escalate only with corroborating evidence.
Prevention: Publish a clear AI policy (Allowed / Allowed with disclosure / Not allowed + examples). Use staged assignments with process artifacts (drafts, prompt logs, reflections) and at least one AI-free checkpoint. Teach citation, paraphrasing, and responsible AI. Coordinate deadlines and offer support to reduce pressure that drives misconduct.
I have observed a case of misuse of student work by a teacher, where the teacher used student research work for a course to further her own research agendas without consent.
This involves the ethical issue of plagiarism and informed consent. The student was not given an opportunity to agree with the particular usage of their data, or even acknowledged for their contribution. This lack of transparency undermines ethical research standards.
The teacher should have asked for explicit consent from the student to uphold integrity. There should have been clear communication about how the data would be handled and credit given.
Teachers should undergo mandatory ethics training periodically to be aware. Also, consent forms and board approval should be made mandatory before the submission of any new research work, to include all contributors to the research.
Digital ethics and integrity emphasis on the fairness, honesty, responsibility and acknowledgement of the ideas taken from other's work. I have observed the violation of digital ethics from one of my colleague who used AI tools to write down some parts of his final year thesis. He has generated some graphs, images about the background of his research field and used as it in his thesis without acknowledgement of AI tools. After submission to the university and results from the blind reviews, he passed his thesis and got excellent grades. So, the appropriate actions should be taken such as usage of data detection tools to find out whether the data has been generated from AI tools and how much similarity to the previous work has been found. Also, the practical representation of the data in terms of experimental results, data analysis should be demonstrated by students.
