Social Media apps .. that we use are designed to maximize user engagement and inorder to do this they often exploit human psychology. While, yes  this keep us enterntained and connected, it can also lead to digital addiction, decreased productivity.

So guys, what do you think.. Do social media companies have an ethical responsibility towards the user to limit these addictive designs or do you think it is completely up to the user to manage their own usuage?

Interesting question! Personally, I think it’s a balance. On one hand, yes, users should be mindful and take charge of their own usage.  Companies should make their platforms less addictive or at least offer features to help with self-control, and users should be proactive about managing their time online.  What do you think….

Kevin Cheng on 2025-09-02 at 14:21

I think social media companies definitely have an ethical responsibility here.  At least the companies offer tools to help, like time limits or reminders… I agree that users need to take responsibility for their own habits and set boundaries.  Do you feel you’re in control of your social media use?

What’s the line between self-censorship and being considerate to people’s feeling?

Jackie Zhang on 2025-08-25 at 21:03

I think the key is intention and context. Being considerate means choosing words carefully to avoid harm while still expressing your honest opinion. Self-censorship becomes problematic when fear or external pressure stops you from engaging in meaningful dialogue or sharing important perspectives. All my conversations with my students are based on creating a safe space for respectful communications.

Alice Yu on 2025-08-25 at 22:06

Thanks! You’re so right, I was so aware of everything my students and I said. Sometimes, I’m afraid of offending anyone online by simply just discussing something, maybe not even sensitive at all.

Rodrigo Alonso on 2025-09-12 at 17:30

I believe the line lies in respect towards yourself and others, there are always ways to covey your ideas in a way that is appropriate. Another issue is whether the person or individuals that listen to your ideas are open to different points of view.

How do you deal with the bias in the provided sources of ChatGPT?

Sue Xu on 2025-08-21 at 15:47

I also wonder if anyone has a solution to this. Sometimes I see different studens cite very similar sources and I reckon it’s probably because of ChatGPT…

Mike Badillo on 2025-08-23 at 18:56

Same:<

Chandani Ghising on 2025-08-28 at 03:59

Oh yes, i also face these problems at certain instances.. instances like when i have the urge to understand about hypothetical or controversial stuffs.

It might not be perfect.. but inorder to tackle this ..i try to understand and apply these few stuff..
i. At 1st , i acknowledge the fact that Chatgpt doesnt have it's own opinion. it's just mirroring the pattern and algorithm that has been installed within it.

ii. I ask for multiple perspectives.. you know a proper prompt which leads me to a neutral viewpoint, so that i can reach to a place where i can understand stuffs without any prejudices.

iii. After getting the informations , i try to cross-check the information with trusted sources.

iv. If incase, i feel the verdict of the information has swayed towards one-side a bit more .. i would start questioning why and prompt further to get a more balanced understanding.

Digital ethics should be more specific about AI use.

I agree that digital ethics should be more specific with AI use.   I think it is important to establish clear guidelines that address issues, like bias, accountability, transparency, etc., and keep them relevant and updated for evolving digital world.

Our university are establishing some specific genAI guidelines use in doing the assignment.  Can someone share some specific guidelines use examples in your institution?

Sue Xu on 2025-08-25 at 09:19

Hi!  Our students are requested to declare what and how to use genAI tools to assist in doing assignments.

Emma Tsoi on 2025-07-25 at 10:37

I usually use Chatgpt to polish my English writing and check my grammar.  It’s very useful.

I use the Chatgpt developed by our university.  Because I am very concerned about the data privacy issues when using public AI tools.

Emily Zhang on 2025-07-23 at 20:16

AI can be an amazing tool for research, brainstorming, improving writing skills.  It should be used ethically and responsibly, and shouldn’t replace critical thinking and creativity.

Hi! I’m a teacher.  How to use AI to assist students in learning?

Mike Badillo on 2025-07-19 at 12:49

AI can be a helpful learning tool, it’s important to make sure your students are using it responsibly.  You can ask them to explain their answers in their own words, look at their drafts.

Alice Yu on 2025-07-20 at 15:12

Do your school have any AI guidelines and regulations?

Jackie Zhang on 2025-07-22 at 23:36

Yes, my school has developed some guidelines for teachers and students on the ethical and proper use of generative AI tools in teaching and learning, and also doing assignment tasks.

Chandani Ghising on 2025-08-28 at 03:37

Hi Sue,

There are multiple ways to use to assist students.
Some of them includes:

i. Chatbots : Just imagine, it's late mid-night ..Nobody's online.Wouldn't it be nice to have someone answer your quieries ASAP?
So, we can have AI make such chatbots which can offer great assistance to students.

ii. Making the study-content more interactive: Let's be honest, we all know understanding plain text takes tons of time and focus. In this modern-day age where the focus span is almost as nil.. i would say most students struggle with their attention span when holding a book.
Now today, with the help of AI.. we can create Artificial simulations of the concept in the books which might help us understand better and retain the concept more for a longer period of time.

iii. We all know , some students are blessed with the ability to retain information faster while somebody does slower compared to others. Hence, here we can use AI platforms where students can study and learn as per their pace and wish thus providing custom study plans.

So, these were some of the few that were at the top of my mind . Lets keep on discussing more .. so that the ideas keep on flowing.
I'll be more than happy to read discussion on such topics.
Thanks.

Reducing digital carbon footprint is very crucial and often overlooked aspect of sustainability.

Mike Badillo on 2025-07-03 at 08:32

Have you heard about digital carbon footprint?  My friend told me that it is the amount of greenhouse gases emitted as a result of our use of digital devices and services.  Do you know how to reduce the digital carbon footprint?

Emily Zhang on 2025-07-06 at 14:36

Digital carbon footprint is a hot topic nowadays.  I think we can delete old emails and files from cloud storage; use wi-fi to consume less energy; turn-off device which is not in use.  Hm, any more methods?

Jake Wilson on 2025-07-11 at 11:09

I usually set limits on screen time; use dark mode; use refurbished electronics to reduce e-wastes.
