Online Course: An Introduction to Digital Ethics

Testimonial (1st Cohort)

It has been a wonderful experience taking this Digital Ethics Microcredential (Advanced Level) online course. I signed up expecting to learn a few things about digital ethics, but I am walking away with a new perspective on so much more.

At my job at the university, we are always trying to help students figure out which courses to take. They often feel lost, so we had an idea: "Why don't we make an app!" We could use AI to suggest courses based on their personality and interests. It felt like a really clever solution, though we knew it would be a lot of work.

But this course made me take a step back. I started thinking, what if our “perfect” app just puts students into a box? What if it is biased and never shows them a course that could challenge them and change their life, simply because it does not fit the data? We quickly realised that the AI can be a starting point, but it cannot be the whole story. The human part is what matters most.

This course helped me to see through [the AI hype]. The reality is that AI is becoming a new tool, not a replacement for people. It is changing our jobs, not eliminating them. Our most important skill now is learning how to be the person who uses that tool thoughtfully and ethically.

This course feels more like a beginning. My journey with digital ethics does not stop here. Moving forward, I am committed to asking those critical questions in every project I am a part of-questions like: "Who is this helping? Who might it harm? And where is the human element?" I am excited to put these principles into practice.
