About the Course:

Building on the success of the Introductory Level course, and recognising the necessity for advanced study, this Advanced Level has been developed, in collaboration with participating universities of the Digital Ethics And Responsibilities (DEAR) project. This 8-hour online course, complemented by two optional live sessions (totalling 2.5 hours), explores critical societal, environmental, and ethical challenges posed by digital technologies.

The course will be delivered through the KEEP Moodle platform, providing you with a variety of interactive features and learning activities, such as video clips, articles, reflection tasks, quizzes, online discussion forums, and livestream sessions.

Intended Learning Outcomes of the 4 Modules:

Module 1 - Privacy and Surveillance
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Define three major theories of (digital) privacy
• Identify and classify privacy harms in real scenarios
• Defend when and whether surveillance can be justified

Module 2 - Digital Technologies and Environmental Sustainability
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Evaluate the environmental impact of digital technologies used in education, including Artificial Intelligence
• Examine strategies in education for addressing the environmental impact of digital technologies
• Formulate plans to minimise the environmental impact of digital technologies at an organisational level

Module 3 - Algorithmic Bias and Discrimination
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Define algorithmic bias and distinguish between its statistical and moral forms
• Identify and analyse the major sources of algorithmic bias
• Evaluate the challenges of implementing algorithmic fairness

Module 4 - AI Hype
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Define 'AI hype' and distinguish it from general technological hype
• Analyse the social, ethical, and environmental harms resulting from hyping AI
• Apply a critical mindset and practical strategies to evaluate and counter hyped claims about AI in real-world scenarios

Target Applicants:

• Completion of "An Introduction to Digital Ethics" or equivalent course is required.

Certificate of Completion:

• Learners who successfully complete all four modules, together with the learning activities (i.e. completion rate > 80%), will receive a certificate of completion.
